Phillip Goodbread Taylor (Do'boy) was drinking in a Mason County saloon on Nov. 14, 1867. Do'boy's brother Hays took a newspaper outside and sat against the wall reading it. A squad of U.S. soldiers walked by and one grabbed Hays' hat brim, jerked it up and said, What do you find so interesting, you damned rebel? When Hays resumed reading, the soldier pushed his hat down over his eyes. Hays shot him through the heart, then shot a sergeant who intervened. A reward was posted for Hays and Do'boy. In 1869, William Sutton led a posse that ambushed and killed Hays Taylor. Do'boy escaped but he was killed later by Sam Holstein in a gun fight not related to the feud. |
