Manuel Tavares Furtado arrived aboard the S.S. Albergeldie, a British vessel, on May 10, 1883 in the Sandwich Islands. The arrival passenger list has him listed as 4 years old which coincides with his year of birth at 1879 on the 1910 and 1920 census, however his tombstone has 1877.
He was accompanied by his father, Jose Tavares (32), his mother, Francisca de Jesus (35), and his older sister Maria (5). His family came from the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores; he was the last in our Furtado lineage in Hawaii to have been born in Portuguese territory.
Manuel always listed his occupation as that of a self-employed Attorney at Law. |
