Obituary

Lawrence "Larry" Dean Cushman, 72, of Gainesville, Virginia, passed away on October 5, 2025, in the company of his wife, Gail Cushman. Larry was born on February 2, 1953, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to William "Bill" Cushman and Lenore "Lee" Cushman. Larry is survived by his brother, Douglas (Barbara), and sister, Carla (John). His younger brother, William "Billy" (Cheryl), preceded him in death. Larry grew up with his loving family in Springfield, Virginia, where he was a gifted athlete in both football and baseball. After a sports injury, he gave up a football scholarship for a baseball scholarship to George Washington University, where he played catcher alongside his brother Doug, who was a pitcher. After college, Larry met Gail on a bus to a softball game and fell in love. They were married for 45 years and travelled the world together. They had three children - Travis, Cole (Randi), and Skylar (Steven) - and five grandchildren - Dax, Emmy, Paisley, Bodie, and Noa. Larry was a successful entrepreneur. He founded the Cushman Insurance Agency in 1981, where he developed several innovative insurance programs that became widely adopted across the industry. In 2009, he expanded by acquiring the J. Douglas Moler Insurance Agency. In 2017, he founded Gun & Trophy Insurance with his son, Cole. In his free time, Larry coached hundreds of athletes, from the baseball diamond to the lacrosse field. Long after his own kids graduated, he continued to love coaching and making a positive impact on the lives of young people. He was also a passionate outdoorsman and avid trap shooter, traveling across the country for competitions and building friendships wherever he went. Larry was deeply involved in Hunters for the Hungry, where he organized events that raised funds to provide more than half a million meals to families in need across Virginia. Most of all, Larry was a loving husband, father, and grandfather whose warmth, humor, and generosity touched everyone who knew him. A funeral service will be held at Manassas Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18th, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Fairfax Rod and Gun Club. Children are welcome as the family gathers to celebrate Larry's life, legacy, and love.
