He began keeping a small community store in a building on a corner of his father's farm in the Bethel neighborhood about 1870. After his marriage in 1877 he moved this business to a farm he had purchased on the township line between Washington and Johnson townships at Springdale, Ripley County, Indiana. Here he was merchant and the Springdale Postmaster from 1877 until his death in 1888. He was also an extensive farmer and stock raiser. At the time of his death he owned 377 acres of land and a lot in south Milan.
