At age 11, Henry arrived in the United States on 31 Jan 1855 aboard the Prussian ship, The Arnold Boninger. He sailed from Rotterdam to New York City with his family. In 1860, Henry lived in Cincinnati, Ohio with his parents. He was employed as a laborer. The next year, Henry joined the 1st Regiment Ohio Light Artillery, Battery I where he served from 3 Nov 1861 until 24 Jul 1865. He re-enlisted in 1864.
